Dear Shri Jairam Ramesh ji,
I have received your D.O. letter No. 1-6/2011-NTCA dated 8th February 2011 which contains your request to notify the Kudremukh National Park as a Tiger Reserve under Section 38(V) of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. The Forest Department in the State is actively examining your proposal. As you yourself have said, around 450 families are to be relocated for which a substantial assistance from the Central Government is required. We have estimated that a sum of RS.50 crores is required for effective relocation of the tribals. Though the Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd. has been closed in accordance with the judgement of the Hon’ble High Court of Karnataka, the Company physically exists with a skeletal staff and all its buildings and structures are intact. An urgent decision has to be taken by the concerned Ministry in the Government of India as to what will be the final fate of these buildings and structures of the Company. A quick decision in this regard would facilitate the State Government to speed up the process of declaring the Kudremukh National Park as a Tiger Reserve.
Shri Jairam Ramesh,
Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Environment and Forests,
Government of India, Paryavaran Bhavan, CGO Complex, Lodi Road, New Delhi.
