BANGALORE: A human interest story prompted Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa to help Manjula, a meritorious student who was supporting herself as a domestic help to fund her studies.Ms. Manjula, a third semester student at BNMTI Engineering College, lost her father while her mother also works for a living in her village.
The news report highlighted how the student had to borrow money for a bus pass and had no means to pay her fees and buy textbooks. The personal staff of the Chief Minister called the newspaper and the girl was traced and invited with her family to the Chief Minister’s office.
Mr. Yeddyurappa assured them that he would meet her educational expenses personally and handed over Rs. 25,000 for the time being. He directed the officials to facilitate her moving to a nearby government girls’ hostel.A communiqué said meritorious poor students can approach
the Chief Minister directly through an application for financial assistance.
